Canon vs. Nikon

The other day Chris surprised me by taking the afternoon off to take us to a nearby waterpark. We had a blast and I plan on posting some pictures of that time together soon. However, right in the middle of our fun, Chris got this cute shot of Meridian

and then our camera proceeded to die. Thus why we think the picture was extremely bright (something went wrong?). We have seemingly tried everything with it: new batteries, reset button, etc. but it will not work. I've been wanting a new camera for awhile now and with our new addition coming any day, I cannot be without one.

In high school, I was in photography and I loved it! I spent every spare moment taking pictures. That was pre-digital age and when we got married we didn't have much money so we bought a Sony Cybershot. Now, I am wanting to buy a DSLR but am debating between Canon and Nikon. I'm looking for any help I can get in picking out the right camera for me, so please chime in and answer the questions below!

If you have a DSLR what do you have? Why do you like it? What do you wish was different about it? Any other thoughts?

  1. Hey! I've used both Canon and Nikon for both DSLRs and the basic point-and-shoot cameras. For point-and-soots I MUCH preferred my Canon because it had a much faster recovery time that my current Nikon. DSLRs.....ya know, I liked them the same! Canon's are a bit less expensive and I feel like the quality is equal to a Nikon...go spend an hour monkeying with them and go with your gut feeling!

  2. Thanks Heather! I never thought I'd go the Canon route, but now I'm hearing it's a great lower level entry camera and since I'm starting all over again learning, it may be the thing to do. I have also heard that Canon is better in low light situations. I'm kind of leaning towards Canon, but I am probably more familiar with Nikon as my dad has a DSLR Nikon. I'm worried about having to "re-learn" it all.

  3. Stick with Canon! :) I'm a little biased, but I love Canon. I currently shoot with the 5Dmkii, but I started out with the Rebel several years ago. The new Rebels they have now look pretty sweet. Also, ditch the kit lens that comes with it and buy the 50mm 1.8. It will run you about $100 which is really inexpensive when it comes to lenses but it's a great portrait lens and is awesome when photographing kids. Feel free to send me a message if you have any more questions. :) Sarah Albert

  4. I was hoping you would chime in Sarah. I really hear wonderful things about the Rebel, so again, leaning towards that. Also, have read and hear many people say just buy the 50mm lens and I will never regret it. It is definitely on my list! So, you would just buy the body, not any lenses?

  5. I love, love, love my Canon Rebel XTi that I got a couple of years ago. You will be able to use the automatic settings right off the bat and then you can take some time to learn the manual settings which are pretty straight forward as well.

  6. I totally agree with Sarah on the Portrait lens! I love my Canon Rebel and I actually use my portrait lens a lot, but also like my 18-55 kit lens too. It's good for quick moving kiddos :) I found a great deal on Amazon, and I researched for MONTHS!! Go for it!!!

  7. Ok, I'm pretty sure you ladies have all sold me on the Canon Rebel! I'll probably look for a kit and then just buy the 50mm lens separate. I'll check out Amazon. Thanks! :)

  8. Both brands are awesome and, actually, very comparable. We have the Nikon D90 and absolutely love it. :)

  9. Thanks for your input Stephanie! It's good to hear that you love your Nikon. I don't think I'll go wrong either way, I just need to decide which way I will for sure go! :)
